UNIVERSITY
OF PHOENIX INTRODUCES GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPY
MILILANI - AUGUST 1999 - For Mililani & other Oahu
residents interested in pursuing a career in marriage and family therapy, the Hawaii
Campus of the University of Phoenix now offers a Master of Counseling degree with a
specialization in marriage and family therapy that meets the educational requirements for
state licensure.
The new program prepares students to be competent professionals
committed to the ideals of marriage and family counseling.
The curriculum, coursework and clinical experiences are designed to
produce outcomes in knowledge, critical thinking, effective development and counseling
skills.
These outcomes, based on accepted counselor education standards, are
also based on competencies required of the working counselor professional. Attention is
given to the development of oral presentation skills, group process skills, research
utilization and exposure to and practice of a wide range of counseling approaches.
By the end of the program, students have developed a broad base of
counseling skills and knowledge to respond to multiculturally diverse clients in a wide
variety of settings.
The program consists of 50 credits of course work, which includes a
nine-credit, 300-hour counseling internship. The internship offers students an opportunity
to provide counseling services to clients for 20 to 32 hours per week under the direction
of an approved agency site supervisor.
Because the University of Phoenix is designed for working adults,
courses are concentrated into four-hour blocks and are on week nights. Students take one
class at a time, so they may better balance the demands of work, family and school.
Additional time will be required for homework, student group meetings, project activities
and clinical work.
The program involves a variety of formats depending on the subject
matter and the competencies to be developed. These formats include lecture, discussion,
demonstration, field trips, exercises, role play, seminar, self-directed learning and
supervised clinical experiences.
Learning is further enhanced by small classes, averaging 12 to 20
students, and interaction with peers and faculty. Courses are developed and taught by
practitioner faculty who bring real-world experience into the classroom.
The University of Phoenix offers education programs for working adults
in downtown Honolulu, Mililani and Maui, serving more than 1,000 students.
For more information on the Marriage and Family Therapy degree program,
please contact the enrollment department in Mililani at 625-7004 or downtown Honolulu at
536-2686.

MILILANI MUSTANGS AT WESTERN REGIONALS
by Paul Connell
SANTA
CLARITA, CALIF - The 1999 Mililani Mustang All Star Team defeated its first opponent,
Blossom Valley (CA), 5-4. Bryant "Mo" Moniz pitched a complete game and had two
hits .
The second game against Garden Grove (CA) lasted 10 innings (a standard
Mustang game is 6 innings). A highly questionable balk call in the sixth inning allowed a
Garden Grove runner to tie the game and send it into extra innings. With Mililani holding
a 6-4 lead in the 10th, Garden Grove managed to come from behind and defeat Mililani 7-6.
Dustin Antolin pitched five strong innings and also homered to lead Mililani.
The following day saw Mililani go down to its second defeat in the
tournament, 8-5, against Agoura. For the second straight day, Dustin Antolin "went
yard" homering over the left field fence. Bryan Hosaka
and Evan Bisho aided the Mililani effort with two hits and two RBIs respectively.
Despite not winning the Western Zone tournament,
Mililani represented Hawaii with pride and distinction. Mililani was a crowd favorite with
its hustle and determination on the field. Off the field, the Hawaii pins and
pineapples were coveted by the tournament participants. Many tournament coaches suggested
that Hawaii be the 2000 host site.
The 1999 State Champion Mililani Mustang players, coaches and families
wish
to thank the COYBL Board and league members for their support during the All Star season. Mahalo nui loa to all of the businesses, civic leaders and
friends who generously donated goods and money to the team during its fund raising drive.
Team members included: Dustin Antolin, Aaron Asamura, Evan Bisho, Chris
Connell, Travis Derby, Scott Fisher, Jayson Fukumoto, Bryan Hosaka, David Ishida, Jr.,
Bryant Moniz, Derek Richards, Landon Satele, Waylen Sing Chow, Curt Ueda, Israel Zablan,
