Currently, my child is on intercession, so I haven’t had a need to travel from my neighborhood between 2:45 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. (school days). My experiences though have been varied. I’ve had to honk my horn on many occasions because kids (boys & girl) from the middle school are riding their skateboards all over the roadway (from the upper end of Makaikai) without any regards for vehicles on the road. I’ve had to come to a sudden stop because either a skateboarder or bicyclist has veered toward me (head on) within a distance of less than 10 feet. I’ve also had to slow way down and honk my horn because some skateboarder is stopped and standing in the middle of my lane watching the other riders coming down hill from the other direction. And if you think that perhaps I’m speeding...sorry to disappoint you, but I’m going slower than the posted speed limit because of all the kids around.
I did notice though, during the last time that I picked up my child from the middle school (before intercession), there seemed to be increased security. There was someone who appeared to be part of school security (he had what appeared to be a portable 2-way radio) standing guard at the edge of the school property. (The area I’m referring to is the sidewalk from the school office to the roadway.) I notice that the only skateboards coming down the sidewalk were being carried instead of ridden!
