I am a recently graduated alumnus of Mililani High School. I frequently crossed the intersection in front of the school in the vincinity of Burger King and the public library. I agree that cars entering into the area should be more willing to yield to students, especially in an intersection that is frequented by a high amount of pedestrians, as well as vehicles. However, I do not feel that the responsibility of keeping the zone accident free falls only on the shoulders of the vehicle operators. I have crossed the intersection many times on foot, as well as in a vehicle, and one could say in a cliched way that it is a "two way street". Now that I am a graduate of Mililani High School and am able to observe the traffic in the intersection purely as a driver and not a pedestrian, I realize that the students walking across the streets are NOT abiding by the rules themselves. I have witnessed, on more than one occasion, one or more students walking across the intersection when the light was clearly warning them not to. Ignorance and youthful nonchalance seem to be 60% of the problem--and this is coming from someone who was in the same position as the present students of Mililani High School. Traffic congestion is not greatly increased in the short time that I have not been a student there and it is clear to me, an alumnus, that, as aforementioned, youthful ignorance and nonchalance, not to mention insouciant behavior, play a large part in this dispute. It may be an erroneous generalization to state this next statement, but I will anyway--how can a 15 year old, with a cigarette in his or her mouth, who is talking non-stop to his or her friends, be a candidate to judge those who follow the traffic laws of the intersection? Once again, it is a "two way street," and that is the bottom line....
