I do know all my neighbors.
I wouldn't feel too badly about your neighborhood. I think knowing your neighbors these days is a function of how many young kids you and your neighbors have. The more kids, the more likely you'll get to know your neighbors. It also helps if you all move into the neighborhood at the same time.
My parents lived in the same house for 33 years. When they bought it (new), they knew all the neighbors. Now they only know a few - and those few tend to be the ones who moved to the neighborhood when it was first built - like they did.
Has it always been this way? Or was there a time when folks were generally friends with their neighbors instead of fearful of them?
I know it is no better in apartment and condo complexes where your neighbor sleeps only a few feet from you and you see them often in the halls - yet never get to know them.
Its kind of weird. But it seems "normal" in the sense of "thats the way it is."
